Windows 3.1x
Frequently Asked Questions & General Help

Here are some of the problems commonly encountered when making an Internet connection with the Windows 3.1x.

I cannot dial in, I get either "Invalid Login" or "Script Aborted, PPP enabled" ?

Check to be sure that you are entering in the correct login name with which you signed up with us. Go and try to retype in your username and password, make sure that they are both in all lowercase. If it still does not work, try the alternate login you signed up with.

I cannot send my mail, I get a message saying "Needs Recipient..." ?

You need to supply a valid e-mail address in the TO: field of your message. It MUST be in the form of aaa@bbb.ccc, For example jackd@inetworld.net

I get the message "Cannot Connect to mail.inetworld.net, this server has no DNS entry" or "Connection Timed Out" in my mail program or web browser?

Check to make sure that you are still connected to the internet, if you are not sure, or have any doubts, disconnect and reconnect to ensure a good connection. If you have call waiting, we would suggest that you shut this off, putting a *70 in front of the phone number will shut it off. Also within the dialer software (Trumpet Winsock) go to the File menu and select settings, make sure that the IP address is 0.0.0.0, otherwise it will connect you but you won't be able to get anywhere.

The program won't access my modem, or the modem won't dial out ?

Check the setting in Trumpet Winsock, go to the File menu and select settings. Make sure that you have the correct Slip(com) port selected. Also change the baud rate to exactly match what your modem speed is.

Windows 3.1 General Help

In order to connect through the Internet through Simply Internet you will be using a program called Trumpet Winsock . You can find this program, if you installed the Simply Internet software, by looking for the icon labeled "double-click to connect" with a picture of a trumpet. This icon will be under the Internet program Group. The first time you try and connect you will be asked to enter some information. This information is you modme init. string. Use the following init strings depending on the tpe of modem you have. You should type these strings in exactly as shown below:

  • US Robotics 14.4 Modem, or any other modem type - AT&F
  • US Robotics 28.8+ Modem - AT&F1
  • Supra brand modems - AT&F2

Another thing to check is the port settings for your computer and Windows 3.1. The easiest way to do this is to go to you Main Program Group. Double-click on Control Panels. Double-click on Ports, and select the port that your modem is connected to, COM 1 or COM 2 are the most common ports used by modems. When this window opens up, make sure that the baud rate / port speed to 38400 if you have a 14.4 modem, 57600 if your modem is 28.8 or faster in speed. (You may have to manually type in that setting.). Make sure that the Flow Control is set to HARDWARE ( RTS & CTS).
